CN Train Derailment Prompts Saskatchewan Villagers to Evacuate

A Canadian National (CN) train carrying dangerous goods derailed near the community of Clair, Saskatchewan last October 7 around 10:40 am. This accident prompted the Saskatchewan villagers to evacuate, especially those who live within a five-mile rad

With the help of the RCMP, everyone was evacuated within the five-mile radius area which accounted to 50 people from Clair. Clair is approximately 190 kilometres east of Saskatoon.

The CN train was hauling a hundred cars of mixed freight but 26 went off the tracks, six were carrying dangerous goods. Two of the derailed cars with dangerous goods spilled petroleum distillate which caused the fire.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) already confirmed that the derailed cars contained dangerous goods; hence, the TSB sent a team to investigate the scene.

According to the witnesses, there was a 30-metre high flame swallowing the derailment site. The CN staff, the local first responders, as well as the provincial hazardous materials crew were dispatched in the scene to extinguish the fire and clean up the area.
